Message to Private Sector

"there is profit to be made"

Halifax: Mark Guslits, a Toronto based architect and developer, is in Halifax today to promote non-profit/private partnerships as a tool to increase the stock of affordable housing and achieve viable communities. The public presentation will be held at the Dalhousie School of Architecture and Planning, 5410 Spring Garden Road between 7:00 and 8:30pm, Thursday May 11, 2006.

Mr. Guslits has extensive partnership experience as both a private developer and non-profit representative and is currently leading the revitalization of Regent Park, Canada's largest social housing development. The presentation will also feature commentary from local community leaders including Kevin Riles, President of the Urban Development Institute, the recognized voice of the development community in Nova Scotia. Mr. Riles is impressed that the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia (AHANS) is taking the initiative to bring such a distinguished speaker to the province to discuss private-non-profit partnerships. Riles says "like AHANS, the UDI has been concerned for some time with the affordability of housing stock in the HRM". Mr. Riles notes there is opportunity for the development community to work proactively with other stakeholders to provide a range of housing options for people in their communities, today and in the future.

Ann Bromley, President of the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia, says that there are non-profit groups across Nova Scotia prepared to discuss partnerships with the private sector. These groups have interests ranging from housing seniors to creating opportunities for modest income home ownership. Ms. Bromley identifies a facilitative role for the provincial housing association and notes that "we are making connections with the private sector to begin the conversation about win-win collaborations that impact on the quality of life in Nova Scotia".

On Friday May 12, 2006 Mr. Guslits will meet with leading Halifax developers, architects and government and non-profit representatives to discuss the specifics of profitable partnerships and opportunities in HRM.
