Dear Community Member,
Community Action on Homelessness (CAH) is pleased to invite you to its sixth annual Fall Workshop, Blueprint for Change: Community Housing Budget on Thursday October 19th. This will be another opportunity for Community, Government and First Voice representatives to come together and take advantage of the diversity of this group to enrich the workshop and discussion, and help create a Community Blueprint for housing in the Halifax community.
With upcoming changes to funding for Affordable Housing and continued uncertainty for the future of Federal homelessness funding, the CAH Fall Workshop organizing committee wanted to provide an opportunity for all stakeholders in housing and homelessness to develop their vision of priorities for the next three years in Housing and Homelessness spending. The federal budget honoured $1.4 billion of the surplus funds set aside from NDP-Liberal Agreement for a Housing Trust. This money will directly to the provinces and it is not clear what guidelines will be in place to govern how this money is spent. This could mean, depending on the surplus, $23million over three years.
This Workshop will allow an opportunity for the community to set priorities for the spending of these dollars which will be presented to government.
The day will be facilitated by Michael Shapcott, one of Canada's leading housing policy experts, and long-time housing and homelessness advocate. Mr. Shapcott has worked with the Ontario Region for the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada; the Rupert Pilot Project, a community development project, and was a community worker with homeless adults at the Toronto Christian Resource Centre. He has also worked at several newspapers in many different capacities and continues to education and research materials on housing and homelessness issues and contributes opinion pieces for national and local media. Mr. Shapcott is co-chair and a founding member of the National Housing and Homelessness Network, a founding member of the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, the Toronto Coalition against Homelessness, and the Bread Not Circuses Coalition.
Enclosed is a workshop registration form that we would like to receive by October 13th, 2006. Remember, space is limited so please register early to secure your attendance. We have reserved spaces for community/first voice, persons who have had a homelessness experience, and are able to support their participation with an honorarium, and with other assistance as necessary. However, we have a limited number of honorariums available and will endeavour to have participation from all groups impacted on by homelessness.
We look forward to seeing you in October!
Sincerely,
Claudia & Darcy
