Friends,

The municipal campaign is underway!

We have written to all Mayors and Wardens in Nova Scotia, urging them to sign the attached proclamation for October 17, the International Day to Eradicate Poverty. The proclamation supports the recommendations put forth by women impacted by poverty, as outlined in the project reports Struggling to Survive and Survival Strategies (posted at www.womenscentre.ca under reports).

We sent out our letters only a few days ago, and already we have the support of the Town of Pictou and The Town of Kentville!

Attached is a copy of the letter that we sent out to all Mayors and Wardens. Over the next couple of days, I will be placing follow-up calls. You can also help by reminding your local municipal officials about the importance of this proclamation and urging them to sign on. We do not have much time.

On October 17, many Mayors, Wardens, and Councilors will be out of town (in Sydney) for the annual meeting with the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. Some members of provincial cabinet are expected to be there as well (and perhaps the Premier). Therefore, when speaking with our municipal governments, we will also be asking them to put forth an emergency resolution on poverty at the meeting.

Things are rolling with plans for the anti-poverty march on October 17th. The t-shirts for the women's march have been ordered and we will be looking sharp for the march!

If you are able to help out in anyway with the march please let me know. Currently, we are looking for a couple of large (one colour) bed sheets/material.or something of that sort. so we can make a big banner with a strong women's message on it. Also, if you have any supplies for placards, etc... please let us know.

Any questions or comments please feel free to contact me.

Rene
