CAH HOUSING WEEK 

OCTOBER 16TH - 20TH 



 

Community Action on Homelessness (CAH), in partnership with the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia, and Community Advocates Network are pleased to host the first Halifax Housing Week October 16 - October 20, 2006. 

The week's events will promote awareness of challenges our community faces in creating balanced and affordable communities and we also like to celebrate the successes that were achieved. 

CAH will kick off the week with the launch of the public awareness campaign "The Many Faces of Homelessness', followed by public panel discussions, workshops, a walking tour with access to successful housing projects in our community, information booths around the city, and "The Other Home Show". 

 

Monday, October 16th

 

10:00-noon : Press Conference  and  Official Launch of the "Many Faces of  Homelessness" 

                     campaign

CAH office, 2030 Gottingen Street:  Bill Carr, the official champion of the campaign will present the new CAH homelessness poster series and brochure to media and the public.

Posters will be displayed and information tables set up around town during Housing Week. 

(Free event- open to the media and public, no registration required)

 

6:30-9: 00pm: Lets Talk Housing 

 

St. Matthews Church Hall, 1479 Barrington Street: Panel presentation. Moderated by Carol Tooton, highlighting our housing successes and potentials for the future followed by a discussion. 

Special Guest: Bill Carr

(Free event- open to the public, no registration required)

 



Tuesday, October 17th 

 

10:00 am -3:00 pm: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Organized by the Community Advocates Network in partnership with CAH, Northern Women Centres, and Oxfam Canada.

March from Victoria Park to the Legislature for recognition for the need for a Poverty Reduction Strategy for Nova Scotia and the implementation of Recommendations unanimously approved by all members of the Standing Committee on Community Services Forum on Poverty.  Lunch and speakers at St. Matthews Church Hall, 1479 Barrington Street with performances by the Shinning Lights Choir.

 

 

Wednesday, October 18th

 

8:30 am-4:30 pm:        Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia AGM

 

               "Opportunities & Directions: The Future of Affordable Housing in Nova Scotia"

 

The Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia (AHANS) is inviting housing providers and advocates, representatives of government, and concerned citizens to attend their AGM and one day workshop.

AHANS will welcome Steve Pomeroy, Focus Consulting Inc. to lead the day's conversations that will provide the foundations of a position paper for AHANS. The paper will outline potential opportunities and directions for housing and serve as a document to stimulate broader debate across the association membership, with levels of government, and among all Nova Scotians.  

The conversations will continue at a Wine and Cheese at the Argyle Bar and Grill, 1575 Argyle Street. Interested delegates can join others for dinner afterwards. 

 

(Registration required- Registration fee $25.00 or free with an AHANS membership. Lunch and Refreshment provided. Please register by October 13, 2006 by contacting ahans at eastlink.ca  or the CAH office: 420 6026). 

 

 

Thursday, October 19th

 

9:00 am - 4:00 pm:                       CAH Annual Fall Workshop

                                   "Blueprint for Change: Alternative Housing Budget".

St. Matthews Church Hall: Free facilitated workshop. Developing a Community-based budget  which makes more effective use of affordable housing dollars that reflect the needs of the local community.

(Free public event - Registration required by October 13th - Lunch and refreshments provided) 



October, Friday 20th

 

10am-1pm: The "Other" Home Show

 

Showcasing shelters, affordable /supportive housing projects and affordability resources. Photo Exhibits. Info Tables. 

 

(Free event open to the public. No registration required. Donations to local shelter, supportive housing and service providers are welcome.)
