A Celebration Of Women’s Work:

“A Woman’s Place is Everywhere”

 

 

 

Date: Saturday, April 28th, 2007

Time: 6:30 cash bar/7:30 meal and event

Location: Dalhousie Student Union Building, McInnis Room

Cost: $35 waged/$30 unwaged per person or $300 per table of ten

*Please have ticket buyers indicate whether they would prefer a vegetarian
or fish chowder meal. 

 

 

Guest of Honour: Alexa McDonough, MP; and Alexis MacDonald of the Stephen
Lewis Foundation.

 

 

Background:  

 

For over 130 years, the Halifax YWCA has been essential to the life of the
Halifax community. The YWCA of Halifax believes in a world where women can
take their rightful place as equal participants in the creation and design
of their world, both locally and globally. 

 

YWCA Halifax is a turning point for women.  Our housing, youth development,
and health promotion programs are for women and young women at critical
turning points in their lives.  Our early learning programs enable families
to thrive.

 

Halifax YWCA is responsive to the needs of the community and the women with
whom we work.  Recently, the YWCA has grown from one location to 9
program-specific locations.  We are going out to where women are to deliver
programs they need most. 

 

 Synopsis:

 

The Women’s Recognition Dinner has honoured women of this community for 25
years and has proved an invaluable way to raise funds for YWCA Turning Point
programs. 

 

In the past this event has recognized individual women who work at the
community level. This year, we are turning our attention to honour 'Teams of
Women', to recognize how women are working collaboratively to make a
positive difference in our community.

 

The Recognition Dinner will focus on celebrating the work of women with
inspirational talks, music, and visual displays. The evening will begin with
a cash bar and pre-event mingle. Participants will be encouraged to meet and
greet each other while enjoying the promotional display. A light meal will
be served beginning at 7:30. On the menu: a homemade soup (fish chowder or
corn chowder option), roll, garden salad and gingerbread for dessert. The
aim is to keep the cost of the event down in order to ensure the inclusion
of as many women as possible. 

 

After the meal serving, the festivities will begin with an exciting program
of celebration. Guest speaker,  Alexa McDonough, M.P., and former YW board
member, will offer a compelling look at the work of women over the years.
Alexis MacDonald (formerly of the Coady Institute) will speak to the work of
women in Africa, through her work with the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The
evening will end with a silent auction and (maybe) dancing.

 

Our goal is to reach and bring out as many women as possible, from all
backgrounds, professions, and points of view. This event is an amazing
opportunity to meet with women from across the city and province, as well as
learn about all the incredible work women are doing everyday with little to
no fanfare. Also, it is an exciting time for the YWCA --a truly meaningful
way for us to reintroduce our selves, our work, and our vision to the wider
community.
