Be A Toque Champion!

Tuesday, February 6, 2007.

Canadians will be raising awareness and funds for 'Raising the Roof', a
national charity dedicated to finding long-term solutions to the growing
problem of homelessness in Canada.

One day per year (the first Tuesday in February) is set aside – called Toque
Tuesday – when thousands of people across the country sell our white toques
& black scarves to raise money for this worthwhile cause. 80% of all funds
raised stay in the community and the remaining 20% goes towards national
solutions for homelessness.

Recipient Agencies in the HRM will be: the HomeBridge Youth Society: a
non-profit charitable organization serving youth at risk, between the ages
of 12-18, in 6 residential facilities in the Halifax Regional Municipality
and Tawaak Housing Association: provides housing for the First Nations
community in Nova Scotia. Units are located throughout the province.

Why not make it a group effort? Gather some of your colleagues and promote
Toque Tuesday throughout your building! It’s easy, fun and so satisfying!
Even Halifax’s Mayor Kelly sells toques for a few hours every year.

New Poverty and Income Advocacy Resources

The CAS Guide to Income Advocacy
The Canadian AIDS Society (CAS) Guide to Income Advocacy is a collection of
tools to help with local income support advocacy efforts. Most of these
tools have been adapted from successful toolkits that have been used widely
by anti-poverty and social justice movements. Some of the topics include:

* * * * *Writing Letters to the Editor
* * * * *Communication Skills
* * * * *Developing a Position Statement
* * * * *Self-Advocacy by Phone
* * * * *Recording Events

The tools contain practical worksheets, hands-on information and tips to
help individuals advocate on their own behalf and to help organizations
develop their own advocacy strategies. Many of the worksheets are excellent
resources for individuals experiencing problems with their provincial income
assistance program. The basic skills and knowledge, however, can be applied
to any situation where advocacy is needed. CAS will be adding additional
tools throughout the year.

“In my experience...” Clients, advocates and government workers talk about
HIV and provincial disability assistance (Consultation Report)
CAS spoke to over 70 clients, advocates and government workers about
provincial disability income assistance. What’s working? What needs to be
improved? What changes would have a big impact on the lives of people
living with HIV/AIDS? Find out what people in the system have to say about
it. Use the report to support your funding proposals. Use the
recommendations to advocate for changes to your provincial assistance
programs.

* * * * *la composition de lettres à la rédaction
* * * * *les aptitudes à la communication
* * * * *l’élaboration d’un énoncé de position
* * * * *l’autoreprésentation par téléphone
* * * * *l’enregistrement d’activités

revenu.
