Atlantic Forum

October 19th, 2007

Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Health and Learning Knowledge Centre is one of five Canadian Council of
Learning's  Knowledge Centres across Canada.  The Other Voices Working Group
is one of the working groups within the Health and Learning Knowledge
Centre.

Text Box: You are invited to submit an application to attend a three day
event. This event consists of 20 people with direct personal experience with
homelessness, poverty, sex work, addictions, low literacy. 

Travel, hotel, meals, expenses and an honourarium will be provided for 20
people with direct personal experience with homelessness, poverty, sex work,
addictions and low literacy.  

For two days we will work together to develop presentations to share with
policy makers, academics, researchers, government officials and community
organizations on the value of the experiential voice.

Introduction: Douglas Hodgkinson, Canadian Council on Learning

Keynote Address: Doug Myers, Prior Learning Assessment Centre, Lauren Casey,
Coordinator, Canadian National Coalition of Experiential Women

Presentations: 20 experts from across the Atlantic with direct personal
experience in addiction, mental health issues, sex work, homelessness,
poverty, and low literacy

Attendees: Policy makers, government officials, researchers and service
providers

The Other Voices Atlantic Forum will include discussions on:

.         What are the risks for individuals and risks to society when we
live below accepted health standards

.         How policy needs to be built on insider knowledge for it to make a
difference

.         How supporting grassroots community groups is necessary to helps
to move the agenda

.         How to learn from all sides of the story

.         What research can tell us so that we can move on
