1)
National Drop the Fee Day!
Thousands of refugees are stuck in limbo in Canada. After being declared as
a person in need of protection, refugees in Canada are then required to pay
$550 fee in order to apply for permanent residence. They must pay $550 for
each adult family member, and $150 for each child that they wish to reunite
with.
The consequences of this modern day head tax include:
-inability for refugees to reunite with family members,
including dependent children
-risk of women and children being subjected to domestic violence when they
can't leave their sponsors
-denial of the right to travel
-inability to participate in the democratic process
-difficulty securing permanent employment
-not getting landed at all
On March 31, 2007 at 11 am, join us for the National Drop the Fee Day at
Halifax Commons (Robie Street & Quinpool Road) and help lobby the Government
to Drop the Fee! Bring your friends, and wear comfortable shoes as we will
walk from the Commons to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada office.
Every step we take will bring refugees closer to being welcome to Canada.
