"The Whores" come to BusStop Theatre

Halifax playwright, Charles Crosby will launch his most eyebrow-raising
project to date as his newest play, The Whores, will premiere at BusStop
Theatre May 16-19. The play is the latest production of Taboo Theatre.

Based on a series of interviews he conducted with Halifax-area sex workers
for a 1994 journalism assignment while a student at Mount St. Vincent
University, Crosby's play tells the story of five prostitutes working in
Halifax. Presented in conjunction with Stepping Stone, which supports people
involved in the sex trade by helping them with their health, safety and well
being, the play pulls no punches as it tells the stories of these five
women. A portion of the door will be donated to Stepping Stone.

"The issues surrounding sex workers are constantly in the news right here in
this region," says Crosby. "It felt like the right time to tackle the
subject."

"When we isolate the topic of sex work, we further isolate sex workers,"
says Rene Ross, Executive Director of Stepping Stone. "It is the isolation
and social marginalization of sex workers that increases the risk of
violence and threatens their health and safety. We at Stepping Stone applaud
Charles for tackling this issue and for challenging the stigma facing sex
workers."

Crosby has never shied away from controversial subject matter. His earlier
work has peeked in the windows of an adult video store and a tattoo and
piercing establishment and witnessed a home invasion in rural Nova Scotia.
His latest play, A Mid-Life Marriage was staged at Neptune Theatre last year
as part of the Atlantic Fringe Festival, and was called "Real, emotionally
alive", "like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf meets Jerry Seinfeld" and "a
professional quality production of a highly entertaining play with an
aftertaste of a lingering sadness" by The Chronicle Herald. His 2005 novel,
italics, mine was well received across the region and short-listed for the
Margaret and John Savage First Book Award at the Atlantic Book Awards.

The Whores features Veronica Reynolds, Stephanie MacDonald, Lynn Reicker,
Gillian Ferrier, and Kris Lee McBride, each delivering a haunted, memorable
performance. Stephanie Kincade is assistant director.

This show contains scenes of nudity, violence, extremely strong language and
strong situations that may not be to everyone's taste. Mature audiences are
recommended.
