Advocate for Income Assistance Support Sessions
Halifax Coalition Against Poverty
MANDATE:
HCAP is a direct-action, anti-poverty organization based in Halifax, NS. We
organize to defend individuals who are mistreated because of being poor. As
well, we launch campaigns against regressive government policy and the
institutions that perpetuate poverty. We believe that there is dignity in
resistance and that the poor, homeless, and their allies should organize to
fight back.
POSITION:
HCAP is currently accepting applications for an Advocate for Income
Assistance Support Sessions. This position offers a wage of $7.60/hour, 40
hours/week. The position is funded by HRSDC and is only available to
students. The position starts May 28 and is a 14 week contract scheduled to
end September 1, 2007.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This summer, HCAP will be conducting a series of Income Assistance Support
Sessions. The sessions will be designed to offer information, advocacy, and
support for recipients of the Employment Support and Income Assistance
program. Specifically, the sessions will help connect ESIA recipients with
health professionals to ensure that recipients have access to any special
needs provisions provided by ESIA. The sessions will ensure that ESIA
recipients are receiving appropriate support in order to have proper
nutrition, housing, transportation, employment opportunities, and healthcare
provisions.
The student will be responsible for:
-Coordination of advocacy support and information for people of low-income
who require assistance at the support sessions;
-Developing and implementing a training session for volunteer advocates who
will assist at the support sessions;
-Promotion of the volunteer opportunity and recruiting the volunteers
necessary to participate in the sessions;
-After the completion of each session, the student will be responsible for
ensuring that all work done by volunteer advocates is complete and any
follow-up that is necessary is taken care of.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Interested students should have:
-Working knowledge of the ESIA act, regulations and policies;
-A strong understanding of the causes of poverty and oppression in society;
-Familiarity with the challenges faced by people living in poverty;
-Experience working with people who face barriers in society due to various
forms of oppression;
-Experience working with the Halifax Coalition Against Poverty is an asset;
-Experience coordinating volunteers;
-Advocacy skills;
The student must be well organized, have computer skills, be able to work in
a collective environment with accountability to the general membership, and
must be an effective communicator and facilitator.
ELIGIBILITY:
This position is funded by Services Canada and is a Canada Summer Job for
students. Eligibility for this position is restricted to the following
criteria. Applicants must:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
-have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year
and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic
year;
-be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee
protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection
Act; and
-be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant
provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
HCAP will give priority to students with a disability, who are members of a
visible minority, and aboriginal students. HCAP also gives preference to
students who face barriers due to gender and class. Please state in your
cover letter if you would like to be considered a priority student for this
position.
HCAP strives to offer a living wage for all employees. Options for
appropriate wages will be discussed individually with each applicant.

-The student will be involved in providing extended support through the HCAP
Advocacy Program if any of the attendees of the support sessions require
immediate or specialized advocacy.
