Hello again!
We at CAH don't want to annoy our members with too many postings, so we've
decided to do one large posting every Thursday or Friday. The exception, as
with HCAP's event, is when events are happening very soon and we need to get
it out asap. We'll also try to add a pdf version as well for a cleaner
print copy.

All for now, honest!

HCAP LAUNCHES 2008 PLAN OF ACTION AND STRATEGY TO FIGHT POVERTY

Tuesday, January 22, 2008
10:30am to 11:00am
George Dixon Centre, 2501 Gottingen Street near Charles St. (Parking off
Brunswick St.)

The Halifax Coalition Against Poverty announces its plan and strategy to
increase Special Needs monies for welfare recipients.

HCAP has organized a Special Needs campaign to challenge the Nova Scotia
government to give poor people more money to cover basic health and living
needs. According to legislation, extra money is to be provided by Community
Services to clients with special health needs. However, the hurdles that the
Department has created for people to access this money are unacceptable.

In 2008 HCAP will work towards removing these hurdles. The plan involves
major work on the Special Needs Campaign including, more special needs
clinics, more pressure on government and more outreach to health providers.

Speakers
Dietetic Intern, Rebeca Green- speaks about the toll that poverty takes on
the health of welfare recipients, and the importance of special needs
monies.

Laurel Miller- tells her story about the impact that special needs money has
had for her and for her family.

Deborah Snow - talks about her personal struggle with cancer while on
welfare and the great impacts that poverty has had on her health.

HCAP Member, Paul Aarntzen- explains HCAP's plan and strategy to increase
special needs monies for welfare recipients over the coming year.

Introductions by artist and activist Jane Kansas.
